Processing "A Century of Writing Instruction in School and College English"
The following video features our timelines of relevant periods of writing instruction over the past century as presented by Hobbs & Berlin (2001) in "A Century of Writing Instruction in School and College English." The timeline include relevant events informing and affecting writing instruction within the various time frames. Collectively, the timelines not only demonstrate the evolution of writing instruction, but they also reveal the competing viewpoints about how writing should be taught, as well as the influence of various socio-cultural, historical, and political events on writing instruction over time. The post-its attached to the overall timeline include various historical events related to aspects of social justice and provide an additional lens for analysis of the history of writing instruction.
